Everyone finds a plethora of restaurants of every denomination in any city centre, but how do you know which one to go for? Well here's a dead cert - lunch or dinner will undoubtedly be a roaring success at Saba, as long as you're a fan of Thai and Vietnamese cuisine . . . and I am! Great location on Clarendon Street and equally great food and service. Paul has created a unique atmosphere at Saba, making it one of the nicest restaurants in Dublin, without breaking the bank!

Only a short ride on the Dublin Dart brings you to fabulous Malahide. This small coastal town has a wonderful Marina, and you guessed it, Cruzzo is located with views over the water and yachts. The modern cuisine, with a slight tendency to seafood and steak, is wonderfully prepared, with service to match. Karen and her team run this 230 seat ship with much love and affection, as it has been in the family for many years.

Blackpool is probably not the first place that jumps to mind when you're thinking of high quality food, but the accolades and awards just keep coming to Kwizeen. Marco and Tony bring not only personality and consitency to the table, but med-style inventiveness and quality. They pride themselves on simple combinations, bold flavours and portions which don't leave you feeling hard done by. Book ahead.

There's not many Cantonese restaurants that I visit, as my experience has dictated that they struggle with consistency in terms of quality of food. The Mandarin have gone the extra mile to entice customers by their involvement with 'Taste Lancashire' and use of local produce where possible. In addition, they've perfected their menu since 1961 giving them not only a loyal following in the town, but a growing repeat visitor market.

Situated in the gorgeous Hodder Valley, Newton in Bowland is as nice a village you'll find anywhere. As you'd expect there was a wee pub feeding and watering the locals and passers by for donkeys years. Things are now changing big style though, since it has been taken over by Kathy smith of Weezos [Clitheroe] fame. The food is interesting but not too clever and they've taken their experience from Weezos and put it to good use here. If you like wine, ask for their advice on their extensive list.

McMenamins is a bold move by Matty Todd to bring something new to Maryport. He's certainly succeeded, with a modern Celtic approach, interesting seasonal menus and an attention to detail of the likes I rarely see. The commitment to the quality of produce used is almost obsessive and I like that, it's reassuring. The interior is contemporary, the staff friendly and somehow this works in Maryport, perhaps in the same way as Damien Hirst's restaurant works in Ilfracombe!
