This is an unusual find. Behind the main building there is the remains of the old mill, so immediately we're talking character and charm. The converted rooms at the base of the mill have been nicely done and there is even a few self-catering units. In addition, there is the restaurant and bar area which has been recently refurbished and outside, a large decked area for those who wish to relax in the Norfolk sunshine or watch the sun go down with a glass of wine. Excellent staff managed by a young but charming Sarah, help to seal the deal.

The wheatsheaf Inn used to be a traditional old Yorkshire Dales pub with sawdust of the floor and a bar full of rough locals.

Paul and Carol have transformed it, but have managed to retain the character and 'soul' of the Inn. The rooms vary from the traditional ones in the old part to the more contemporary ones in the rear annex. The bar and small restaurant offer a good variety of dishes, served to a consistent standard. Try a glass of wine or pint of beer in front of the open fire.

'The Inn at Hawnby' used to be the Hawnby Hotel until the dreaded inspection scheme changed, but personally I think the name suits it better. There are nine good sized rooms, six at the Inn and 3 rather sweetly positioned just across the road. They've been nicely done and I'm pleased to say the restaurant has now been taken to a similar high standard with great views and inviting menus. The garden is also an attraction in nicer weather for lunches or a quiet pint of ale, served by your ex-city slicker-now-hamlet-lover hosts, Kath and Dave.

The Sun Inn, a much neglected pub, found its saviours in the form of Mark and Lucy who saw through the drab exterior, dated interior and 'traditional' rooms. There vision was to be much more food and accommodation led and they have successfully fused the traditional lakeland Inn with a contemporary style that enhances its character. They not only got their five stars, but have achieved a Rosette for the restaurant.

Oakenclough is a small hamlet, near to the Forest of Bowland and not too far from the M6, so quite easy to get to. Rowland has worked hard to refurbish the 3 large en-suite bedrooms to a very high standard. There is also a bar and 30 cover restaurant downstairs offering good quality fayre, achieving the Taste Lancashire Quality Assured status. The Kenlis Arms is a very attractive building, with a well proportioned garden area to the side. The business is predominantly bar-led, but food and the three en-suite rooms are starting to take on more of an important role. Everything is cooked fresh on site and there is a large function room should the need arise for a special event.
