This is what I call the 'right' size of hotel; not too big to be unfriendly, but big enough to have the facilities I'm looking for: 5 course dinner, swimming pool, jacuzzi bath and a cosy bar, so I can order beer and watch the sun slip behind the Lakeland fells out on the terrace. The Sodeau's have been here for over 20 years and they just keep on improving it!

Chris Carrs has gone to extraordinary lengths [emotional and financial] to take a traditional 2 star Grasmere Hotel, close it down and refurbish it from top to toe. The £2.5 million investment is not only seen in the 30 boutique style rooms, but in the public areas and feature central staircase. Now at four star, the hotel is not only enticing new customers but is wowing past customers who have seen the transformation that has been made.

The Bedford Lodge is a fine looking four star hotel in a prime spot in Newmarket. The place oozes quality from the moment you step into the reception area and they easily carry off their aim of blending 'contemporary, chic and traditional charm'. The health club is all singing, all dancing and the Orangery [2 rosette restaurant] is an imaginative and unique place to eat.

Not only has the hotel recently moved up to four star, but Mike Dunbobbin has just wrestled the hotel from his parents for a rather large undisclosed sum! Now fully in the driving seat, the new generation continue to push the standards of facilities and customer service; indeed the quality of the suites and executive rooms in particular are superb.

This is the highest rated AA hotel in Scarborough, and the only four star hotel. This place has seen an unpresidented level of investment over the last three years, including spa and excellent fitness suite. While other seaside hotels are not putting the money back in and suffering a slow death, Dave and his team are relishing the challenges the future will bring.

The Shepherds Hotel is ideally situated on the A66, just outside Cockermouth, with loads of parking. The 27 bedrooms are smart and consistent whichever room you get. The restaurant offers 'hot rock' cuisine which initially sounds gimicky, but is rather good fun and very tasty as the meat is very carefully sourced from local suppliers. Unlike lots of 3 star hotels, the staff here are great; chatty and responsive whether your a corporate customer or in the area for fun.

Christine Dougal and her man have taken the bold step of purchasing the hotel next door, knocking through and giving themselves a massive 34 bedrooms to maintain. A huge amount has been achieved in terms of internal refurbishment and 2008 will see the outside get a facelift too. Ideally situated near to the town centre and the sea front.

Over the last six years Alan and Suzanne have really turned this business around since they first purchased it. Time, money and expertise has taken them to the final phase of development. This is a place to spoil yourself, or someone close to you. The bar and hotel restaurant [JR's] are comfortable yet professional and the staff [mainly family] will bend over backwards to help.

Unlike the vast majority of properties in Blackpool, Philip has taken the Holmsdale Hotel down the route of getting a national inspection, and while we all have our gripes with the ratings system, it does demonstrate a commitment to quality. The Holmsdale is a good 3 star and ideally suited to couples or small groups of adults, as you won't be finding an children here.

Andrew and Lyn pride themselves on the quality of their welcome and warm hospitality, which is undoubtedly why they manage to secure so many repeat bookings. They're much larger than the average Blackpool Guest House, but somehow manage to retain an excellent level of service. With the greater number of rooms comes with some parking [please call to arrange first], a good sized lounge and separate bar area.
